For the past four years Maren has attended the Teen Writer's Conference in Utah. It's a great event sponsored by LDS Storymakers for ages 14-18. About 150 attend each year, and it's held at Weber State University in Ogden. They have some great writers and agents teach the workshops, including Jessica Day George, Brandon Mull, Chad Morris, Lisa Mangum, and Josi Kilpack.
The 2013 conference ended up being the same date her close friend, Kyleigh Hatch, chose to be baptized, so she only got to go to the first half. When she told the presenters she'd be leaving at lunch time they pulled her aside and asked if she was sure she couldn't stay. When she told them why she had to leave they let her know that her entry had won first place! She won $100 and got some great feedback on her entry.

Emma, trying to steal the $100 bill |
Yesterday history repeated itself, and her entry won first place again! This time she got to make the long, awkward walk to the front to pick up her award and receive some well-deserved applause. She's a terrific writer, and I'm excited to read her novels one of these days in the not too distant future.
